America elects Gay Asian but UK representation is still poor

December 6, 2009 2:36 PM

Alex Wan has recently become the first openly gay and Asian-American man elected to the Atlanta City Council.

Merlene Emerson, chair of the Chinese Liberal Democrats said "A Chinese Democrat friend of mine has just won a seat in Atlanta, Georgia USA on an openly gay ticket! The world is changing fast!"

As Liberal Democrats we support equal opportunities, not just in terms of ethnicity but also gender and sexuality etc.

Cllr Allan Siao Ming Witherick adds "The world is changing fast, but in 2008 when the LGA (Local Government Association) took a census of Councillors in the UK of the 18,808 which responded just 30 admitted to being of Chinese or mixed Chinese descent. This represents barely 0.2% of all councillors and simply isn't enough."

We are always seeking more people to get involved, from activists and supporters through to candidates and Councillors as well as future MPs! Why not join the Chinese Liberal Democrats today?
