February 5, 2014 2:49 PM

David Heath and Sarah YongAt a packed meeting on Saturday 1st February members of the Somerton and Frome Liberal Democrats selected local woman Sarah Yong as their prospective parliamentary candidate for the 2015 General Election. Sarah succeeds local MP David Heath who announced his retirement in October last year.

30 year old Sarah has lived in Somerset since the age of three and attended local schools. She has campaigned in the area for many years and has previous experience in the military, youth work and business. In her speech to members Sarah talked about the need to ensure Somerset gets a fair deal from Government in areas such as school funding, fighting for superfast broadband and in particular investment in flood prevention measures.

Sarah who is of mixed Scottish and Chinese parentage said: "This is a huge honour to have been chosen to take over from David Heath MP as the Lib Dem candidate in Somerton and Frome.

"It's vitally important we increase our diversity in Parliament and it's about time we have Chinese representation in the House of Commons. I will work incredibly hard to ensure I get elected so the Chinese in Britain have a strong voice."

David Heath said "Sarah won through a tough selection process and I couldn't be more pleased. She is energetic and hard-working, knows the area well, and will make sure that the voice of Somerset continues to be heard in Westminster and elsewhere. I look forward to working closely with her over the next year, and I wish her every success for the future."

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg MP has also endorsed Sarah as the new PPC. He had tweeted earlier this week: "Congratulations to @srhyong on being selected as the Lib Dem candidate in Somerton and Frome. She will be an outstanding MP."
