History making at the National Liberal Club

Statue of Gladstone CNYWhat would Liberal Prime Minister Gladstone have thought of his statue holding two red lanterns, or of the sight of a Chinese lion prancing up the grand marble staircase of the Club that he had founded?

The Chinese LibDems returned to the NLC for a second year running, but for the first time, Janet Berridge, (the first female Chairman at the National Liberal Club in its 136 year history) was present to host the proceedings.

It was also the first time that Lord Tom McNally, former Justice Minister during the Coalition government, had attended a CLD dinner in our 12 year history. He spoke as a Fellow of the 48 Group Club on the ever developing diplomatic and trading relationship between the UK and China. With Brexit looming, American isolationism under Trump, and volatility in the Pacific with North Korea, UK will be looking to China as a stable ally and trading partner.

"The Golden Era is here to stay" he said at the end of his speech, to the delight of our guest from the Chinese Embassy. Compliments were also given to the Club chef for producing authentic Chinese dishes for the celebrations.

It was a first for me too, as the Auctioneer for the evening. I was perhaps a bit too ready with the hammer (having rehearsed for the part whilst watching Bargain Hunt), but still managing to reach our target. All thanks to our generous bidders and donors of prizes, and to CLD helpers Sarah Cheung, Ruby Chow, Alex Payton and Mehmet Ece.

Proceeds from the auction and raffle have been ear-marked to support Chinese LibDem candidates in the coming local elections in May. The CLD invites applicants from all local Liberal Democrat parties across the country to apply for a CLD grant. Applications to be received by the end of this month; enquiries to info@chineselibdems.org.uk
