The Chinese Liberal Democrats (CLD) is an associated grouping of the Liberal Democrats, formed to promote closer links between the Party and the Chinese Community in the UK.
It is our aim and purpose to:
I've lived in the London Borough of Camden for over 20 years and stood as a Liberal Democrat candidate in the May local elections. Though I was not successful in my ward, it was a great achievement that the Liberal Democrats became the major party in Camden, overturning 35 years of Labour rule. I joined the party at the same time as I moved to London and have been a supporter ever since. Why - what makes the Liberal Democrats special?
They are special to me because they represent what we as human beings all aspire to: my membership card states "The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity".
In exploring the policies of all three parties, the Liberal Democrats most closely matched my own vision of how society and communities should work. To me the Conservative party was too traditional and selfish, and the Labour party wanted to equalise people downwards rather than upwards. The Liberal Democrat policies on health, education, housing, crime, taxation, and the environment, are all relevant to me as a working woman with responsibilities to older people, children growing up in a increasingly global world, and young adults with their ambitions and expectations.
For example, I believe that there should be a fair, transparent and simple taxation system with no hidden taxation increases. I believe that as an affluent, advanced society we should be able to provide affordable housing and education for all, and free care for the elderly. I believe it's important to have good local government where services are efficient and each citizen's views are taken into account.
The Liberal Democrats also recognise that Britain is a multi-ethnic and multi-faith society and is much the richer for that. It pledges to ensure that our laws reflect diversity in Britain, and that they protect minorities from violence, discrimination and harassment. They have refused to join the anti-immigration rhetoric.
We are the third largest political party in Britain. But we are growing. More people are joining us as they realise we are the real alternative to other parties.
