Cllr Dr Gary Wong and local party members

Introducing our new CLD Councillor Dr Gary Wong, in his own words:

"I was born in British Hong Kong and came to Britain when I was young. I went to school initially in Orpington, Kent and later at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire.

I was educated at University of Glasgow where I gained my medical degree. I also hold a Master degree in Sociology at University of Bristol.

I completed my foundation training in Scotland. I went on and attained my Higher Specialist training in South West of England. I currently work as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the National Health Service. I am a member of the Medical Advisory Committee and an Educational Supervisor (Health Education Wessex). I am also a member of the Royal college of Psychiatrists.

I live in Somerset with my wife and our daughter. I love my family and adore my daughter. I am a keen sailor and skier. I also have a keen interest in Economy and Finance. As part of my hobby, I manage a small globally diversified multi-assets investment portfolio.

I joined the Liberal Democrats at a time when our nation is deeply divided. With a decade of austerity and loose monetary policy, we see an unprecedented rise in Economic inequality. Social mobility is grind to a halt. Many of our public services such as Health, Education and Police are all at breaking point. We see the rise of Populism and the erosion of liberal values.

I live in an area where new houses are being built in an ever-increasing numbers. There is a lack of provision for parking, public transport and local amenities. The local residents are frustrated with the promises that were made and then being broken.

I decided to stand for my ward as a District councillor to open up the council procedures and hold the Executives to account. I want to make a positive difference to people's lives. Ultimately, I want to fight for a better meritocratic society for my daughter.

I was well supported by our local group leader and members. I must say it is not easy to balance a working life, family life, educational responsibilities and political activities. I am honoured to be elected by the people of North Petherton.

As Hippocrates said, 'Life is short and art long, opportunity fleeting, experimentations perilous and judgement difficult'.

I vow to fulfil my duty with the best of my ability."
