Chinese Lib Dems support new All Party Parliamentary China Group
On 28 July, the new All Party Parliamentary sub-group focusing on the Chinese in Britain was launched at Portcullis House, hosted and chaired by Mark Hendrick MP. He was fulsome in his support and praise for the UK Chinese community's economic and cultural contributions over the years.
Also in attendance were Consul General Lu Xu from the Chinese Embassy and Christine Lee, founder of the BC Project, both of whom gave their support to the new grouping and expressed their hopes to see more British Chinese participate in UK politics in the future. They also paid tribute to the 8 Parliamentary candidates of Chinese descent who had stood in the General Elections on 6 May, four of whom were Liberal Democrats.
Merlene Emerson, Chair of Chinese Liberal Democrats said:
"We would like to see the APPCG as a platform for members from the Chinese community to raise issues of concern and to inform the policies of the Coalition Government.
"Chinese Liberal Democrats are keen to participate in the forum especially as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has now been given the role of leading in UK's relations and trade links with China."
Other members on the APPCG executive committee include Liberal Democrat peer Lord Clement-Jones and Deputy Leader Simon Hughes MP.
