Chinese veteran politicians call for reform

In the aftermath of the Nobel Peace Prize announcement to Liu Xiaobo, 23 elders of the Chinese Communist Party have written a letter making some surprising demands. They have expressed their wish for the same changes which Xiaobo was originally sent to prison for. Amongst calls for a more tolerant approach to freedom of speech, they also addressed the need for more lenient policies regarding the internet censorship and the treatment of journalists.

According to the original Constitution, the citizens of People's Republic of China should be allowed to freely express their opinions. However, many believe the actions and policies of today's PRC do not do their cause any justice, in their attempt to erase all criticism and opposition to the Party.

This rare and unusual letter also outlined eight major changes that must be made. A few of them are the transparency of the Party and its leaders to the public, allowing Hong Kong and Macau publications to be circulated in the Mainland, and the abolition of cyber-policing.
