CLD statement on Black Lives Matter
We wish to express our sympathy with the family of the late George Floyd who tragically lost his life on 25 May 2020 in Minneapolis as a result of police brutality.
Chinese Liberal Democrats stand in solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement that started in the United States but is equally relevant here in the UK and worldwide.
People of black African and Caribbean background have long suffered systemic racism and discrimination within the criminal justice and immigration systems and continue to face inequalities in education, health and employment.
We have also been appalled by allegations of the ill treatment of black people living and working in the Peoples' Republic of China due to the Covid19 pandemic. Although the Chinese Government claim to have taken steps to stamp out hate crime and racist practices against people of black African heritage in China, we urge the Chinese Government to do more by working closely with the governments of the African nations.
CLDs have been championing race issues in the UK since our founding in 2006. We stand by our colleagues in the Liberal Democrats Campaign for Race Equality to fight against racism, and for hate crime and prejudice to be eradicated from society. CLD supports peaceful protests and efforts to reform the education curriculum to more accurately reflect the injustices of white colonial rule and history.
We are reminded of the Liberal Democrat policy paper "Eradicating Race Inequality" which was adopted at Spring Conference in 2019. A copy of this paper and its wide ranging recommendations can be read here:
