CLDs re-elect former Camden Councillor Linda Chung as Chair for another year
Chinese Liberal Democrats have had a very active year reported Linda Chung at the CLD annual general meeting at Camden townhall on 21 November.
She then elucidated a long list of CLD's activities over the past year, including:
- Deputy Mayor making with Sam Li in Lewes in May,
- publication of CLD research on UK-China Twinned cities and the co-hosting of a conference in Nottingham University on the topic in June,
- participation as a strategic partner in the "Ensuring We Remember" campaign to commemorate the contributions of the 96,000 Chinese Labour Corps during WW1 and procuring a letter of support from Deputy PM Nick Clegg MP,
- co-hosting a joint fringe debate with Association of Liberal Democrats Engineers and Scientists (ALDES) at Federal Conference in Glasgow in October and proposing an emergency motion on HongKong,
- co-option of Wing Chan, Gen Sec of China Sail Training Association to the executive, and Linda's attendance at the Tall Ships Festival in Greenwich in September,
- fighting against racism and being a joint signatory to a letter by BC Project and 6 other Chinese organisations to the Football Association earlier this month protesting against use of the term "chinks" by Dave Whelan, Chair of Wigan.
The formal business was followed by a more social and relaxed discussion and presentation by Professor Richard Webber from Kings College London. He shared about his ground breaking research findings on geo-demographics, how he could have predicted Clacton-on-Sea electing a UKIP MP, the growing importance of the black and ethnic minority vote and how his software Mosaic and Origins can be of use to the different political parties for targeting their voters. This was particularly fascinating given that the General Elections 2015 were around the corner. CLD expect to field candidates candidates next May.
