Message from Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg MP

"I want to wish the members of the Chinese in Britain Forum every success in their fundraising efforts to build a permanent memorial to the work of the Chinese Labour Corps during the First World War.

"This conflict touched the lives of many people, not least the families of the Chinese Labour Corps volunteers who died in service. The 96,000 strong corps worked tirelessly to support the allies, and lost over a fifth of their number while doing so.

"These were volunteers from remote villages in China, recruited by the British to support soldiers on the front line. For their service, loyalty and valour, they deserve our thanks and I would ask everyone to lend their support to this campaign to honour their sacrifice.

"So good luck to all those involved in organising and contributing to this evening and the wider campaign. Your work will ensure that the brave men of the Chinese Labour Corps are never forgotten."
