Gearing up for Local Elections on 5th May!

3 May 2022

As we prepare for local Council elections this Thursday, Chinese LibDems are proud to be supporting 5 candidates of Chinese East and SE Asian background.

Cllr Sarah Cheung Johnson

Sarah Cheung Johnson moved to Longstanton after a decade in Investment Banking IT, latterly as an Executive Director at Goldman Sachs. Elected as a Councillor 4 years ago she has been working to protect local services, from social care to transport.

"Cuts to children's services and funding for health visitors have already directly impacted my daughter and son - so when I say I care, it's not just me paying lip service. These things matter to me because they directly affect my family, home and community" says Sarah.

Yi-Pei Chou Turvey

YiPei Chou Turvey was born in Taiwan then raised in Belgium before moving to Scotland.

People are her motivation and she wants to be part of creating a fair society and great community. Since her teen years she has been involved in charities such as Oxfam, the Church, and has led groups such as Scouts and playgroups. She has also campaigned in local politics and for students' rights as a class representative. Now it's time for her to use this drive to serve her local community in Banchory and Aberdeenshire.

"The Liberal Democrats work in every aspect to build a brighter future where the values of liberty, equality and community can be found. These values are my values." says YiPei. However there is still more to do to improve the sense of community, and to help local schools, shops, and businesses achieve their potential. Once elected, she will work hard and improve and bring all those important things to a great level.

Robert Kim

Robert Kim, a British Korean has lived in the UK for 27 years and is standing in New Malden, Kingston to be a voice for Koreans living in the UK and to represent his constituents of all background on issues of concern.

He has advised different governments and utilities on their preparation and project development as a UK Solicitor specialising in Energy and Infrastructure project development. He has also served as a trustee for the Kingston Race and Equality Council and the London Korean School.

Commenting on the fight against Covid19 pandemic, Robert believes that we should learn more about the world around us and regardless of race, colour, religion or sex, work to improve the situation of unequal and unjust distribution of resources and opportunities and make the world a better and safer place.

Phil Ling, Paul Kohler and Kirsten Ga lea

Phil Ling, former Treasurer of Chinese Liberal Democrats is standing in the Council elections for the newly created Wandle ward in Merton Borough. It is a ward which is truly a three way fight between Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and Labour - although in the general election the ward sits in Wimbledon where the Liberal Democrats lost to the Conservatives by just 628 votes, less than 1% in it.

Phil is standing on a platform to improve the Council's waste management, fight to keep Wimbledon police station open, make more train stations fully accessible, tackle the climate emergency and have a more transparent Council service.

Bill and Gary in Somerset

Cllr Gary Wong is standing for election in May 2022 with Bill Revans to be the Somerset Councillors for the North Petherton Division. Both are committed local councillors who live in the area and work hard to help people in our communities.

Gary has been a Sedgemoor District Councillor for three years. He lives in Wilstock with his wife and daughter. He has been successful in challenging Sedgemoor's approach to funding infrastructure in new communities leading to substantial investment in local facilities.

Gary is a medical doctor and Consultant Psychiatrist in our NHS, working on the frontline in the pandemic. He wants to campaign to improve our health and care facilities locally.
