Lest we forget the Chinese Labour Corps in WW1
100 years ago, the British and French armies recruited 140,000 Chinese men to work behind the Western Front during the First World War. They were the CHINESE LABOUR CORPS (CLC) who made a vital contribution to help the Allies win, but have since become "the forgotten of the forgotten"* in WW1 history.
CHINESE ARTS SPACE (CAS) presents PROJECT NEW EARTH (PNE) as part of the commemorations for WW1, celebrating the CLC's memory within the context of British Chinese communities in the UK today. Commissioned artists create four short works: two evocative music-dance films, an exciting live contemporary dance and a moving music drama.
There will be a public performance on 8 September at the China Exchange, London Chinatown, followed by artists' Q&A. Tickets are priced at £5 and are available on Eventbrite.
Chinese Liberal Democrats are also a Strategic Partner of the "Ensuring We Remember" project campaigning for a permanent memorial in the UK for the CLC for their contributions and sacrifices made in WW1. We will be hosting a table at a fundraising dinner organised by CIAC on 12 September at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant in Chinatown. To join us please email info@chineselibdems.org.uk to reserve your place.
