Across the UK, the Liberal Democrats did particularly well in Scotland widening our lead in Orkney and Shetland Islands and gaining 2 further seats. We also won 45 additional Council seats across England.
The Party did not do as well in London where we only managed to re-elect Caroline Pidgeon to the London Assembly. In the run up to May 5, it was observed that the London Liberal Democrats were neck and neck with UKIP. It was a chance for voters to choose a Liberal candidate versus one from a xenophobic anti immigration party. Sadly we lost our second seat to UKIP with a margin of only a few thousand votes.
Merlene Emerson, Chinese LibDem Vice-Chair and List Candidate said:
"My political ambitions are only an extension of my community activism and I can continue to work on causes affecting Londoners regardless of whether I am in City Hall. So please carry on contacting me."
In the meanwhile the increased vote share for UKIP in the May elections signal a warning for the coming EU Referendum on 23 June where UK's future within Europe is at stake with a possible Brexit.
