National Hate Crime Awareness Week
(8th - 15th October 2022, Organised by #NationalHCAW)
17-24-30 NationalHCAW has been running National Hate Crime Awareness Week every year, since 2012 between the second to third Saturday of October. #NationalHCAW aims to "encourage the authorities (Government, Police and Councils), key partners (the anti-hate crime sector and voluntary sector), and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle hate crime across the UK".
During National Hate Crime Awareness Week, organisations and individuals are encouraged to run events throughout the UK to highlight the fight against hate crime. If you plan to run an event, please register at Plan your NationalHCAW. #NationalHCAW can then help promote your event through its social media campaign and Google map. You can also volunteer to help on the website.
This year #NationalHCAW has chosen to work in close partnership with CARG (Campaign Against Racism Group, previously known as the Covid-19 Against Racism Group) which formed during the Covid-19 pandemic in response to the increase in hate crime directed towards members of the East and Southeast Asian communities.
Each year there is a ceremony in St Paul Cathedral where a National Candle of Hope and Remembrance is lit and remains in the Cathedral for the duration of the week. This year candles will be lit in memory of victims of Race Hate Crime experienced by the East and Southeast Asian communities. The ceremony will take place on Sunday 9th August from 17:30 to 18:30 pm. Please book via Eventbrite below and allow time to clear through security and take your seat. About 17-24-30 NationalHCAW
17-24-30 was founded as a Facebook group in March 2009 by Mark Healey and Ryan Parkins to mark the 10th anniversary of the London Nail Bomb attacks on Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho. 17-24-30 took its name from the dates of the three attacks: 17th, 24th and 30th April. Each year in April, Acts of Remembrance are conducted to mark these anniversaries.
In 2010, 17-24-30 evolved into a small charity called 17-24-30 No To Hate Crime Campaign and in January 2019 became 17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week. In August 2019, it was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation with the Charity Commission - Charity No 1184819.
